Audrey Hepburn’s Sons, Luca and Sean, Open Up on How Their Mom Left Hollywood to Raise Them

Audrey Hepburn is best known for her work in the entertainment industry. However, the icon actually left Hollywood to raise her children. In a recent interview with Closer, her sons, Luca and Sean, recalled how Hepburn did her best to give the two a “normal upbringing” that helped prepare them for the real world.

Hepburn starred in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Roman Holiday, Sabrina, My Fair Lady, and many more classic films. She’s widely recognized as an icon in the realm of film. She also did extensive humanitarian work.

However, Audrey tried to hide the extent of her fame from her kids in an attempt to give them a chance at a normal life. Her oldest son, Sean, explained how he discovered her films.

“I was back home in Switzerland. [I found that] my mother kept all her awards, film memorabilia, costumes and photographs in the attic,” he told Closer Weekly. “That’s how I first discovered her films.”

Audrey Hepburn Valued Family Over Anything Else

In 1967, Hepburn stepped away from the spotlight to raise her children. In doing so, she had time to devote herself to motherhood. Her sons claimed that the actress was often there to pick them up from school and take them to different after-school activities.

Before having her first child, Hepburn suffered from a series of devastating miscarriages. According to her sons, she put family over everything else.

“When I had to go to school and could no longer travel to be with her on the set, she gave up her career,” Sean said. “She felt the most valuable thing was family.”

She spent a good portion of this retirement raising her sons in a Swiss farmhouse in the countryside. The boys say that it was anything from a boring existence. They got to make jams from their own fruit and take refreshing walks, all without the pressure of their mother’s fame lingering over their heads.

“I think that’s the greatest gift she gave us, this normal upbringing without her fame hanging over our heads. It actually prepared us for the world,” Sean said.

A New TV Series Will Take a Look at the Icon’s Life

Many feel fascinated with Audrey Hepburn’s story. This includes TV writer Jacklyn Hoyt, who will pen a new series about the life of the star. She’s working directly from a story pitch from Hepburn’s own son, Luca. Hoyt has previously written and worked for The Good Wife.

Knowing one of her children has a voice in the series makes it all the more exciting, and with an acclaimed writer at the helm, it could be a promising show.

Hepburn lived a lavish life in Hollywood but gave it all up for a simpler existence with her family. The actress, who passed away at 63, is deeply missed.
