A video from the set of Disney’s Hocus Pocus 2 shows the Sanderson sisters (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy) filming a brand new musical number. The wicked trifecta reached Halloween icon status decades after Hocus Pocus premiered in 1993. A large part of the film’s continued success no doubt lies in Midler, Parker, and Najimy’s larger-than-life performances as Winnie, Sarah, and Mary. One of their most memorable scenes in the original is when they perform I Put A Spell On You at a Halloween bash, literally putting attendees under their spell. When Disney greenlit the sequel in 2020, fans immediately wondered what the Sandersons’ new song would be.
With Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) at the helm, Hocus Pocus 2 began filming on Rhode Island in the fall of 2021. The Ocean State was transformed into Salem, MA, for the production. Lucky onlookers immediately started sharing glimpses of various scenes shooting throughout the state, showing the original witches back in action. Social media has been ablaze with behind-the-scenes updates, from photos of the “Salem Scare Fest” to flying scenes with the Sanderson sisters. Of course, there was no crowd luckier than the ones who witnessed the filming of the sequel’s new musical number.
Hocus Pocus Guide shared several sneak peeks of Midler leading the powerhouse trio in a witchy rendition of Blondie’s One Way Or Another. The latest videos show Midler giving both Najimy and Parker a high five after seemingly nailing a take. Donning their famous costumes and standing on stage before a crowd of extras, they buzz with excitement on a chilly night. Watch the clip below:
While spoiler-filled snippets of the scene have spilled onto the internet, this sweet moment in-between takes is enough to hold the world over without ruining the magic. In context, the Sandersons are reprising their singing career in modern-day Salem during the costume contest portion of the town’s Halloween festival, “Salem Scare Fest.” As the winner is announced, they storm the stage and cast a musical spell over the audience. In line with the plot, the witches are undoubtedly on the hunt for the girls that summoned them back to life.
Disney is clearly conjuring the same formula that made fans love the first film. It’s nearly impossible to top the legendary I Put A Spell On You scene, so Hocus Pocus 2 producers are creating something in the same ballpark by letting Winnie put her whimsical spin on another popular song. Onstage at the Halloween festival is the perfect setting, tugging at the nostalgic strings of audiences. After all, once the Sandersons are on a stage, they’re going to sing – one way or another, that is.
