Stampede 100 Day Countdown: 1963 – Bob Hope, The Three Stooges and Tonto

Bob Hope, at the peak of his fame, was parade marshal. He did a couple of comedy shows and made several public appearances, including a book signing at the downtown Eaton’s store. The Herald reported that the comedian, resplendent in green loafers, blue slacks, pink-striped shirt and yellow sports coat quipped his way through a 30-minute autograph session for his book, I Owe Russia $1,200.

Hope was joined in the parade by the actor, Jay Silverheels, known to every child at that time as the Lone Ranger’s faithful companion Tonto. The Three Stooges were also part of the ’63 Stampede lineup. They performed twice a day for the full week at the Corral in a “star-studded variety show” featuring animal acts, Norbu the almost human gorilla, Binko the Clown, musical acts and Tony the celebrated wonder horse.
