Carl Weathers has confirmed that The Mandalorian season 3 filming has wrapped. The highly anticipated season started filming in September 2021 after getting delayed from an April start date. The Mandalorian season 3 has been said to reportedly premiere around Christmas time, following the release of Star Wars’ Andor series. Though most of the upcoming season has remained tight under wraps, some details have emerged, and quite a few line up with where Din Djarin’s (Pedro Pascal) journey has left off.
The bittersweet ending to The Mandalorian season 2 had viewers expecting to see Din emotionally charged from his time spent apart from Grogu (Baby Yoda), but the character’s appearance in The Book of Boba Fett dramatically changed his course. Ever since the audience last saw Din in his own show, he has now learned more of Mandalore’s and the Darksaber’s history, been banished from his old tribe for removing his helmet, customized an N-1 Starfighter with his friend Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris) to replace the Razor Crest, and even reunited with his foundling who chose his adopted father over his Jedi path. Expectations for The Mandalorian season 3 have thus altered quite vastly in the past two months following the conclusion of The Book of Boba Fett, which has caused the anticipation for the new season to increase.
Now, director and actor Carl Weathers has confirmed via Twitter that it won’t be much longer until The Mandalorian season 3 hits viewers’ screens. In a now-deleted Instagram post, a costume designer for the series revealed that season 3 had filming had wrapped. After she removed the post, viewers were left wondering if the news was true. Weathers, who plays Greef Karga in addition to directing on the series, stepped in to quote a tweet from Star Wars Stuff that shared the news of The Mandalorian’s filming wrap, adding that it’s “a season of WONDERFULNESS!” With Weathers being the only confirmed director so far for season 3, his words hold weight in proving that filming has in fact wrapped. This news is long-awaited and exciting for viewers who have been hoping for a 2022 release of The Mandalorian season 3. The time frame of filming fits that of the series’ sophomore season, which began around September 2019 and wrapped in March 2020. This could set season 3 up for an even earlier release than Christmas time, though no official date has been revealed just yet. With Andor anticipated to release in August and wrap up its 12-episode series in early to mid-November, it would make sense for The Mandalorian season 3 to arrive on Disney+ in that timeframe. That window would also be very meaningful for the series, as it would be almost exactly three years after its 2019 debut date of November 12.
With all the exciting details The Book of Boba Fett has added to Din’s journey as well as Weathers’ previous tweets on the thrill that’s to come with The Mandalorian season 3, the upcoming installment is building quite the hype amongst its audience. Some viewers are worried that due to Pascal’s extensive filming for HBO’s The Last of Us he hasn’t been able to be on set of The Mandalorian as much, though Pascal’s own words following the conclusion of season 2 seem to confirm that he will in fact be lending his face and much more to Din’s role in the show’s next season. This makes sense for Din’s upcoming journey, as he still has yet to fully grapple with the consequences of removing his helmet in season 2 and being banished from his tribe in The Book of Boba Fett. It’s also been heavily foreshadowed that Din may find a new Mandalorian way, and season 3 seems to be heading in that direction with Din’s new role as the leader of Mandalore under the Darksaber he’s acquired. No matter what’s in store for Din in The Mandalorian season 3 and how it’s portrayed, viewers can rest assured that it’s now one step closer to hitting their screens in 2022.
