The Mandalorian season 3 will be better, darker, and denser than the previous seasons, according to the cast. Pedro Pascal once again returns to the role of Din Djarin in The Mandalorian season 3, reuniting with his small, yet powerful companion, Grogu. The characters were brought back together at the end of The Book of Boba Fett, after Grogu chose to return rather than become a Jedi under Luke Skywalker’s tutelage.
The Book of Boba Fett acted quite a bit like The Mandalorian season 2.5, continuing the story after the end of The Mandalorian season 2, which saw Grogu taken in by Skywalker and Din Djarin faced with a new challenge, that of becoming the ruler of Mandalore after winning the darksaber in battle. Djarin doesn’t want the title, but Bo-Katan does, but she won’t accept the ancient weapon without winning it in combat, as is Mandalorian tradition. After acquiring a new ship and his little green traveling companion, Djarin will have to contend with what to do with the darksaber, as well as his place in Mandalorian society, now that he is the de facto ruler.
Talking to ET Online, Pascal says that The Mandalorian season 3 “is even better than the previous one,” and that “It’s safe to say that you’re going to love it.” Carl Weathers, who is not only acting in, but directing episodes of the new season had a similar take, saying that The Mandalorian season 3 is “fuller” and has “a lot more heft.” Weathers went on to say that “It’s so dense with so much action but also character.” Katee Sackhoff, who reprises her role as Bo-Katan Kryze, said that “the vibe” of The Mandalorian season 3 is “dark.” Giancarlo Esposito, who plays villain Moff Gideaon says that the new season will be “larger than ever” and act as an expansion of the previous season. Writer/Producer Jon Favreau is currently writing The Mandalorian season 4, which Esposito says plays into what’s in store for The Mandalorian season 3: “It’s a season that has great ideas, great teasings and great tips for the future.”
Favreau teased The Mandalorian season 3 recently while at Star Wars Celebration, announcing that the series will return in 2023, as well as other nuggets of info about what to expect. The showrunner said that the relationship between Din Djarin and Bo-Katan will be further explored in the new season, as their journeys will collide on the Mandalorian homeworld of Mandalore. The Mandalorian season 3 footage screened at Star Wars Celebration had Djarin and Grogu on the mysterious planet, where Din will have to face some tough choices and new challenges as he comes to terms with his new role in their society.
The Mandalorian has continued to expand the Star Wars mythology in the best possible way, paying proper homage to the world already established, while taking it in new directions that feel fitting and exciting. Diving deeper into the Mandalore society and the traditions that hold Din to his vow as a Mandalorian will make the new season that much more compelling and explore a part of the Star Wars universe that has been fascinating from the beginning. Taking things in a darker direction is also a welcome addition to the show, which hasn’t exactly steered from that aspect, but hasn’t entirely leaned into it yet, either. The Mandalorian season 3 is sure to be at peak hype levels when it arrives, as the show (and the characters) have continued to gain popularity and momentum, making the next evolution a can’t miss for viewers.
